ITM or CBT, Which Training Course is Right for You

If you are thinking about undertaking a motorcycle training course you will likely want to do a bit of research, to make sure you pick the correct one for your ability and confidence level. If you are a total beginner there are 2 courses open to you, the ITM training or the CBT training.

ITM Training

The ITM training course is a gentler, slower, course for those who have never ridden a moped or scooter, who are a bit more hesitant, and who do not want to jump straight into CBT training. ITM training is an optional course, it is not essential to getting your motorcycle license.

The aim of the ITM training is to introduce you to the motorcycle and its controls, and to get you riding at a basic standard, prior to taking your CBT. There is no guarantee you will pass your CBT first time, so the ITM training can help you build up your confidence, and may save you money in the long run. The ITM is client centred learning, meaning it will be run at a pace you are totally confident with. It is also, most often, 1-2-1 or max 2-2-1, meaning there is no peer pressure.

CBT Training

The CBT training is an essential course, you need to complete this before riding on the road. Training will start in an off road environment, where you will learn the basics of how the bike works, before learning how to pull away, change gear, signal, manoeuver and stop safely. Once you are confident you have got the hang of handling the bike, the instructor will take you out for a road ride.

The CBT training is a little bit more full on than the ITM training, and you may be in a group with people you don’t know, so if the thought of this intimidates you it is worth taking the ITM training first.
